Gastric Reflux

This week I have been visiting a Lovely mum and her adorable baby. The baby is exclusively breastfed. Babies often spill a little after feeding, and this is quite normal but Ive never seen a breastfed baby that spills so much. The mum has a supply of bibs and clothing on hand due to the fact she is continually feeding half the time and the other half of the time the baby spends bringing up the milk she just finished. The poor wee thing is constantly grizzly too, only wanting to sleep in short spurts. The other day i suggested propping baby up to sleep (baby sleeping on a 30 degree angle) and the mum actually got baby to sleep for an hour.

Last year i read an article in the New Zealand College of Midwives Journal about Gastric reflux, and i mentally filed it away for future reference. Gastric reflux is when the "valve" at the top of the stomach doesn't close properly after a feed, thereby allowing the baby's stomach contents; food and digestive acids, to be regurgitated. It doesn't need treating with medications or surgery unless the baby is failing to gain weight or is in pain, which i beleive is happening with this baby. There is also an informative nz website "crying over spilt milk" which is an invaluable resource for families dealing with Reflux.

Hi Tania,

My first baby had reflux and it was a nightmare no more than 30mins sleep at a time and after six weeks I was a demented idiot. In the end I did have to put him down on his tummy to sleep it was the only way.
working in the neonatal unit I learnt that the babies with immature digestive tracts digest their food better in this position and the incidence of reflux is less.

I love your Eportfolio

Here is the new blog of one of our Maori nurse educators at Otago Polytechnic. She is developing an online course about cultural safety (I think). I'm sure she'd love to connect with you:

Hi Tania
Great blogging. Well done.
You might like to read this article on pyloric stenosis as a possible cause of reflux.
