Eportfolio & Midwifery Standards Review

http://www.flickr.com/photos/vanishing/15379702/- slide 5

This week I have had my Review  I was worried because there is so much work and reflection involved and I have been so busy at work.  I cant say too much about what was actually discussed due to the confidentiality agreement we all sign, but what makes it easier for all involved and an important lesson for myself is

  • I must work on my portfolio and reflections throughout the year and update it regularly and relate all my written stuff back to the standards & competencies
  • Complete my statistics regularly and send out the consumer feedback forms on a regular basis.  This year I will try and think of an incentive for the women to send back the form, one suggestion was to take a photo on my last visit and send that with the feedback form to the mum.
I did discuss the use of an e-portfolio for my next review.  The Reviewers did have lots of questions, what is an e-portfolio?  How would I implement an e-portfolio?  How much easier, difficult or different  does it make the review meeting  - for the Reviewers and the Midwife being Reviewed.
My question is how can we put into action  the us of e-portfolios in the review process thereby making the process easier for those involved?

At this stage I don;t know the answer so it up to us to lead the way with exploring options - I seriously think we should look at making this some sort of research project.

Hi Tania,

I was wondering about the possibility of giving the reviewers the blogspot address of where the portfolio was being held. I thought this may give them an opportunity to review the portfolio prior to the review and then they could bring up things about your portfolio. The only thing to keep back is the reflections you could still make up a learning development plan as part of the portfolio but discuss the cases which brought it about at review.

The other thing I`ve just seen in relation to your previous post on gastric reflux is an article in the latest NZ doctor magazine,
Little upchuckers: reflux or disease? by Stephen Mouat, consultant paediatric gastroenterologist at Starship Hospital, Auckland

Hi
Sarah - The reviewers knew nothing about e-portfolios so I agree we need some sort of research project and we need to get the word out about e-portfolios amongst our colleagues.
Pam- I suggested the same thing to the reviewers. My own papers were sent with insufficient postage so, they were returned to me and I ended up having to courier them. It would have been so much easier to just give them a web address. One issue we discussed was computer access and computer abilities for the reviewers. But that would just be an education issue ie: a requirement if you wanted to be a reviewer.

I agree with you Tania, as far as the reviewers are concerned those who are LMC`s or work within a hospital setting should have some sort of computer access. As for other reviewers there is plenty of access in public places.
